How to Install Gas Monitoring Systems


Many homes use gas as their primary fuel and as such, adequate measures must be taken to ensure the safety of the home by monitoring gas leaks. Gas monitoring systems are installed to detect the presence of gas in the home and to also detect toxic levels of other gases in the home such as carbon monoxide. Since these systems are so important, they have to be placed strategically to ensure they work as expected. So, what should you consider when installing gas detection and monitoring systems?


To make sure the gas monitoring system can detect the presence of gas as fast as possible, it should be installed strategically. For natural gas monitoring systems, you can install them high on the walls because natural gas rises. For carbon dioxide and monoxide detections systems, these should be installed near the floor because these gases are heavier than air and will disperse towards the ground.

The Gas Distribution System

There are lots of different ways contractors can build your gas distribution system. Because of this, there may be lots of areas where a gas leak can occur. A proper home inspection should be done to find areas where leaks are likely to occur. Once these areas have been identified, sensors can be placed there.

Number of Sensors

Most homes will not need more than two or three gas detection and monitoring systems. That said, you should have sensors in areas where gas leaks are likely to occur and where gas is likely to accumulate. These include the kitchen, basement, and attic.

When deciding on the number of sensors to install, it is always a good idea to get as many of them as you can because you would rather have too many than too few. Also, the more sensors you have, the larger the portion of the house that will be covered.

Ventilation Patterns

Ventilation patterns are important because there are some areas in your home where gas cannot accumulate because of the amount of air that passes through there. If a gas monitoring system or sensor is placed there, it will do no good. Therefore, homeowners must think about the size of doors and windows because these let in most air and determine your home’s ventilation pattern. Next, check the position of fans and air conditioning systems. These two move air around and can interfere with the ability of the gas monitoring system to do its job.

Avoid Adverse Conditions

Gas detectors should not be installed in areas where they will be subject to adverse conditions. All gas monitoring systems from have specifications that should be adhered to when installing these systems. These specifications include provisions for humidity levels, airborne particle concentration, and extreme temperatures. If you place gas sensors in areas with adverse conditions, they will not work as expected because these adverse conditions can destroy the sensitive electronics inside the sensors.

Every home should have a gas monitoring and detection system installed. These systems do not only help you know about the presence of high natural gas concentration, but they can also alert you to a high concentration of other gases such as carbon monoxide in the home.
