What is Oculus Rift?

Oculus rift is a virtual-reality device that is mounted on the head. This display pairs with headphones to give you the complete experience of actually “being” in the world where the game is taking place.

This product is the brainchild of Oculus VR. Such was the power of the ideas and products proposed by Oculus VR that they managed to gain $16m of funding in the startup stage. This success was built on by the purchase of Oculus VR by Facebook at a whopping $2bn. Two generations of developer kits have been available to the public of Oculus Rift and pre-orders of the consumer version have been open since early 2016.

There has been much speculation about oculus rift release date.

Oculus Rift Release Date

This VR gadget is set to be released early on in the year 2016. The company has taking pre-orders since 4pm on the 6th of January and shipping will begin in early March. No official oculus rift release date has been announced yet.

The games included are EYE: Valkyrie and Lucky’s Tale. A Xbox One controller is part of the Oculus rift with which you can play these games.

In their blog post, Oculus commented on their latest product. They informed the consumers that the Rift would include advancements in presence, immersion and comfort that was part and parcel of the Crescent Bay prototype. However, the new system will include an improved tracking system for seated as well as standing gameplay. The design of the Rift has been modified with modern ergonomics to fit your head more naturally.

In mid-December, the company announced that all pre-orders would receive a free copy of the EYE : Valkyrie sold only for the Oculus Rift. This was followed by a large public outcry to know the oculus rift release date.

Oculus Rift Pricing

In terms of global prices, the Oculus Rift is set to be priced at around $350. However, pre-orders would have to pay an additional amount for the privilege of being among the first to receive it. You can procure one online from the first-week of January for around 400 euros online. Or you can wait for the oculus rift release date to be announced and buy it from stores.

The company has informed the industry that Oculus rift’s consumer version will be priced at $599 (around 410 euros). However, this amount does not include the prices of tax and shipping so an additional amount of up to 30% might be levied. This will be confirmed along with the oculus rift release date soon.

This fact came up when the CEO of Oculus Rift , Palmer Lucky, was interviewed by Road to VR. The CEO was asked to comment on the pricing of the product, especially if it would be the same as the DK2 headset, priced at $350. Palmer’s response was that the price would be in the same ballpark but on the higher side.

This was followed by an attempt at justification in the hike of prices. The Oculus CEO was eager to say that the Oculus Rift is host to a lot of additional technological improvements that one could not find in the DK1 and DK2 headsets. Palmer denies any incentive to increase prices due to rising demand for the VR gadget. In a nutshell, Palmer said that any product involved many decisions with trade-offs and this time Oculus has tried to incorporate the best in the Rift. He states that no compromises have been made on quality and the very best features have been included, which is why the price might be higher than the earlier versions. On the topic of oculus rift release date, no comments were made.

Oculus Rift Controller and Touch

For gamers across the world, there is great news from Oculus. Thanks to the partnership with Microsoft, the Rift is not accompanied by the trademark propitiatory controller. This VR gadget will be accompanied by a wireless Xbox One wireless controller.

However, that is not all. New developments in the controller segment have been predicted, such as Oculus Touch. Wireless controllers that sense the motion of your hands, these are called “half-moon”. Each controller includes an analog stick, two buttons and a trigger. What’s more, the oculus touch includes two such controllers, one for each hand. Additionally, the controllers are armed with haptic feedback and sensors that can respond to motions such as waving, pointing and sticking your thumb up.

This great controller is still in the pipes and has not yet officially been announced. We assume it will be shipped only months into 2016, not along with the Rift. Like the oculus rift release date, a lot of speculation accompanies this issue.

Compatability with Windows 10

Oculus and Microsoft have taken their partnership all the way with the Rift being completely Windows 10 compatible. You can stream games from your Xbox One console and play them on the Rift. This allows you to enjoy virtual reality and control the sense of space while playing your favorite games. When the oculus rift release date is finally released, we expect the sales of Xbox One games to rise considerably. The Rift will work natively with Windows 10.

Oculus Rift Games

The VR gadget is set to be accompanied with two games exclusively for this product – the EYE: Valkyrie and Lucky’s Tales. Along with this, a range of other games are set to be launched that can be played on the rift. Last year, the company announced announcement of a whopping $10m to be invested in developing individual games for this device.

Other game titles include

  1. Lucky’s Tale
  2. Damage Core
  3. Edge of Nowhere
  4. Esper
  5. VR Sports Challenge
  6. AirMechVR
  7. Chronos

Further titles ought to be released with oculus rift release dates.

Specs and features of the Rift

The Oculus rift is all set to be launched with custom optics and display. To the delight of gamers, the Rift is to house two OLED display screens with a combined resolution of 2160×1200. These screens will have low latency so expect none of those pesky blurs and visible pixels. There is also mention of a new constellation tracking system to enhance your experience and integrated VR Audio. The Rift is audio device-compatible so you can attach your own headsets to it. We expect oculus rift release dates to be accompanied by a set of announcements for other compatible devices.

In physical terms, the Oculus Rift is coated by fabric and designed ergonomically. There are significant changes in distribution of weight so expect this one to be much more comfortable. Such is the level of customization that the Rift allows you to adjust the lenses and suit your eyes for the best experience. When the consumer version of the device is launched, that is, the oculus rift release date is announced to the public, these developments will be confirmed.

The VR Portal for this device is named Oculus Home. Here you can view all your games and manage them as well as enjoy previews of other games that you wish to buy. There is a 2D version of this so you can remotely access your portal from a PC. Many of these specs are speculations and a concrete answer will only present itself at the time of the oculus rift release date.

Oculus Rift Developer Edition Details

The second generation of the Developer Kit version for the Oculus Rift (or the DK2 as it is called) has a display spanning 5.7inches with 1080p generated across both eyes. The chief concern in launching the consumer version was to reduce the weight and increase comfort. It was also necessary to reduce the size so as to make it more affordable. As is the norm, the device uses stereoscopic 3D to give you the same effect as normal human vision. This means that both eyes see extra space to their respective sides.

The DK2 version weighs 379g, which has experimentally found to be a little on the heavier side. Thus, the weight has to be reduced to launch a truly consumer compatible gadget. The motion tracking system in this VR gadget uses a camera on the outside to track infrared dots on the headset. The consumer version is proposed to be armed with 1000Hz Adjacent Reality Tracking which means there will be minimal or no lag in tracking. Oculus Rift includes a 3-axis combination of gyros, accelerometers and magnetometers.

The device is to come with DVI and HDMI Inputs. Tracking data will be sent through USB inputs and the device is shipped with a power adapter to connect the control box to a power outlet. CNET has speculated that Oculus is developing motion controllers to allow your hand and body movements to interact with the game play.

What its like to use the Oculus Rift

We tested the developer version of the Oculus Rift developer version much before the oculus rift release date. Therefore, only the developers kit version of the device have been tried out for the experience. This gadget shows you a game-type world where you can move using the controller. The device does not detect hand and body motions yet, so you cannot guide movement with your body.

In tan experiment, a rollercoaster ride was taken using the Oculus Rift. And the experience was just wow! This was unlike any other forms of 3D experienced so far. A combination of all round vision, 3 Dimensional effects and complete noise cancellation through the headset meant that the experience was as real as it could get.

One of the main areas of improvement is the comfort. The DK2 version feels quite heavy and a little uncomfortable. It also requires time spent on tweaking so you get the right balance for your preferences. Also, if you are visually impaired or use glasses, you cannot do without them while experiencing the Rift and this is a major negative.

To be a commercial success, the Rift has to improve upon these points and design itself more towards comfort and easy use.

The 720p experience on the DK1 set cannot be described anywhere above average. It was expected that the display will be taken up a notch and so it has, with the consumer version set to be launched at 2160×1200 combined resolution.

The overall experience of the DK1 and DK2 sets of the Oculus Rift are not exactly mind blowing but are definitely great advancements in the Virtual Reality Sector.

Uses of Oculus Rift

This virtual reality device, though marketed largely for gamers, can be used for much more than that. For example, if you wish to watch one of your favorite matches at the Wimbledon but don’t want to travel all the way or find some inconveniences. Oculus Rift brings you the entire experience of a seat in the main stand within the confines of your home.

The same applies to different audio-visual experiences. Many people experience the desire to visit far-flung exotic locations but cannot do so due to various constraints. Oculus Rift solves this quandary by allowing you to experience every bit of your destination from the comfort of your home.

The best part about this gadget is that it can be used to experience genuine reality and not just imaginative sci-fi worlds of games.
